How can design improve your product?

  • Enhanced emotional experience of the user
  • The product is easier to use and more intuitive (improved User Experience)

  • defined design language in a product range underlines your brand

  • Flawless ergonomics

  • Aesthetic form

When is the best time to invite a designer to a new product development? The answer is: the earlier the better.
Get introduced to a quick overview of the typical steps of a design process:

1. User analysis
One key element of good design is to understand the user´s needs and capabilities and help him from there on his way to accomplish his goal.
A range of research and interview methods allow insights on your target group´s social background and value system.

The newly designed product has to fit your customer´s needs. Therefore, you have to know your customer.

2. Analysis of your existing product, ...
A detailed and methodical examination method unveils problems in the existing product and their context. If you want to learn more about this step, I would be happy to talk to you in person. All you need to get in touch with me can be found on my Contact page.

3. Ideation and Concept development
Ideas that solve or circumvent product flaws and innovative concepts that open new opportunities are developed for further discussion in form of Concept sketches. All ideas are based upon the previous phase where the needs for innovation and optimization were formulated.

4. Work-like models

Development of work-like models verify that potential solutions of a problem actually work while using a new technology without the need of building a prototype.Work-like models are often developed together with an engineering department to make sure that the model has the relevant benchmark data. These models can look unconventional, like the electric brush shown above, which in an earlier life was an electric hand saw.

5. Consolidated concept
A selection of new concepts has been made that are supposed to be implemented in the new product. If the functionality is drastically different from the products on the market, it is possible to verify this decision with a consumer survey at this stage.

6. CAD File modeling
In cooperation with engineers from either your or my network, the number of necessary parts for the technology of the consolidated concept define the proportions of the new product. Ergonomic mock-ups of new designs can be tested in its future work environment help to verify that the new design is usable. During multiple iterations of detailing, the designer supports the engineer to verify that the idea of the design stays alive until the product finally comes to market.

7. Photorealistic renders of the final product
Simulating colour schemes of the new product in digital photorealistic images have been a great help in the past to make decision between colour variants. Photorealistic renders can also be very useful for marketing an the future generations of a product series.
